He Sells Hope for a Living

A decade ago, Frederick "Freddy" Shegog was homeless in Center City Philadelphia — begging for change near the Ritz-Carlton, battling addiction, and fighting for his life. Then a stranger stopped, looked him in the eye, and said: "Brother, you ain't dying today.”

That moment changed everything.

Freddy went to treatment, met his wife Kim, returned to school, and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies — then earned his Master of Public Administration.

As a freshman, a class assignment caught the attention of his English 025 instructor, who helped get his story published in The Philadelphia Inquirer. That's when Freddy discovered something that would define the rest of his life: his voice had the power to transform others. Today, Freddy speaks to audiences across the country and around the world — at universities, national conferences, healthcare institutions, and in rooms with legislators and policymakers. His mission is simple: to use everything he has been through to help someone else believe in themselves.

"College didn't only change my bank account. It changed my soul."
— Frederick Shegog
